Volleyball roundup: Sherman wins second district match

FRISCO -- Sherman dropped the first two sets before storming back to take the last three and beat Frisco High on the road, 23-25, 18-25, 25-13, 25-22, 15-8, on Tuesday night for their second District 9-4A win of the season.

"It was a good win," Lady Cats head coach Malina Aleman said. "They got a little spark and they caught fire and played hard. They played together. You could see the intensity in their eyes. They were out there to fight for it, and they all fought for it."

Shaquoia Mask finished with a season-high 18 kills while Anna Jones added 13 kills and 25 digs, Jessica Wash put down 11 kills and Lindsay Kirkpatrick collected 11 digs for Sherman.

Carin Hepner had 18 digs, Victoria James added three kills and two blocks and Casey Hamiter finished with two kills and a block for the Lady Cats (2-10, 12-22), who travel to Frisco Liberty on Friday.

No. 25 Liberty def. Denison 3-0

Ashton Walters and Brooke Furst each had five kills in a losing effort as first-place Frisco Liberty defeated Denison, 25-15, 27-25, 25-21, in district play on Tuesday night.

"We came out flat in the first game, but played about as good as we could play in the second and third games," Denison head coach Saundra Hess said. "I was really proud of their effort."

Caroline Parker and Imani Finley put down three kills apiece while Danna Neasbitt finished with nine assists and three kills and Rachel Oakley handed out seven assists for Denison (16-19, 3-9) which hosts McKinney North on Friday for Senior Night.

District 9-3A
Celina def. Whitesboro 3-1

WHITESBORO -- Kortney Beebe had 16 kills and Courtney Davis finished with seven kills and three blocks in a losing effort as Celina defeated Whitesboro, 25-17, 17-25, 27-25, 25-16, in district action on Tuesday.

Becca Winter added seven kills and 10 digs while Krista Hitt and Jill Schuessler each collected 11 digs and Taylor Ezzell handed out 28 assists for Whitesboro (22-12, 2-6), which travels to Prosper at 5 p.m. on Friday.

District 11-2A
No. 7 Gunter def. Bells 3-0

BELLS -- Asserting their district dominance, the Lady Tigers (29-9, 9-0) powered to a 25-17, 25-22, 25-11 win over second-place Bells to clinch a playoff berth.

Joey Bailey had seven digs, 10 kills and eight blocks, and Morgan Watson recorded nine digs, 23 assists and a block for Gunter.

Erica Young added four digs, Kristi Cross had six digs, four kills and three blocks, Lindsey Beaty contributed nine digs and four kills and Harlee Johnson finished with eight digs, six kills two blocks and an ace.

The Lady Tigers host Melissa on Friday while Bells hosts Leonard. Gunter can sew up the 11-2A championship and first-round playoff bye with a win.

Bells (16-13, 7-2) and idle Melissa are currently tied for second, but will likely settle that in the regular-season finale Oct. 30.

Howe def. Tom Bean 3-0

HOWE -- Ashton James and Stephanie Creekmore each had five kills as Howe defeated Tom Bean in district action on Tuesday night.

Paige Potter and Brittnni Smith had two aces apiece while Briana Slawson collected 12 digs and Jessica Luangaphay added nine digs for Howe (16-24, 4-6), which has a bye on Friday before playing at Gunter on Tuesday.

District 11-A
No. 23 Savoy def. Gold-Burg 3-0

SAVOY -- Caitlin McClain had nine kills and Bailey McGehee put down eight kills as Savoy defeated Gold-Burg, 25-8, 25-13, 25-8, in district action on Tuesday night to clinch a playoff spot.

Lauren Camp added four kills, Natalie Brasher finished with three kills and Whitney Cooke handed out 24 assists to go with seven aces for Savoy.

District 17-A
No. 8 Detroit def. Dodd City 3-0

DODD CITY -- Christi Petty had 18 points, 13 digs, five kills and three aces and Alex Hilliard collected 13 kills, nine blocks and nine points in Dodd City's 25-22, 25-20, 25-19 loss to Detroit.

Kayla Thompson and Misty Goodin combined for 23 assists, 19 points and 11 digs for Dodd City, which dropped to 2-7 in 17-A action. Briann Hilliard chipped in 13 kills and five blocks, while Rainy Goodin had five digs.
