Volleyball roundup: Sherman wins first district match in two seasons

After 23 consecutive losses in district play, Sherman's girls finally left the volleyball court a winner Tuesday night.

With a team effort and a commitment to win, the Lady Cats rallied from a two-games-to-one deficit to defeat McKinney, 25-20, 23-25, 10-25, 25-15, 15-13, in 9-4A action for the program's first win in district play since 2007.

"These girls fought and stayed with it, and I'm proud of them," said Lady Cats coach Malina Aleman. "They could taste it going into the fifth game. You could see the fire in their eyes."

Sherman's players and many fans wore pink ribbons as part of their "Dig Pink" fundraiser to raise money for breast cancer research.

The Lady Cats (11-19, 1-7) got strong play from the back row in addition to its usual strong showing up front. Ashli Wieck recorded 19 assists and 21 digs while Anna Jones had seven kills and 29 digs and Carin Hepner added 19 digs.

"They wanted to have the victory, and they put it together," Aleman said.

Shaquoia Mask finished with eight kills and two blocks, Victoria James added seven kills and two blocks and Jessica Wash had six kills and four blocks for the Lady Cats.

The Lady Cats host Frisco Centennial on Friday and then go to Denison next Tuesday for the return match in their rivalry.

"I hope they take this fire with them into the next match, and we play just as hard and get another one," Aleman said. "Volleyball is such a mental game."

Centennial def. Denison 3-0

FRISCO -- Ashlyn Conrad collected 19 digs and Imani Finley had five kills in a losing effort as Frisco Centennial defeated Denison, 25-19, 25-15, 25-18.

Brooke Furst put down four kills, Kendra Robbins and Ashton Walters each finished with three kills, Rachel Oakley handed out seven assists and Danna Neasbitt chipped in six assists for Denison (15-16, 2-6), which plays at Frisco Wakeland on Friday night.

District 9-3A
No. 2 Prosper def. Whitesboro 3-0

WHITESBORO -- Kortney Beebe had 13 kills and Taylor Ezzell handed out 22 assists in a losing effort as Prosper defeated Whitesboro, 25-14, 25-23, 25-13.

Jill Schuessler, Becca Winter and Courtney Davis all had three kills apiece while Krista Hitt collected nine digs for Whitesboro (21-9, 1-3), which travels to Gainesville on Friday night.

Callisburg def. No. 17 Pottsboro 3-0

CALLISBURG -- Tara Wescoat had nine kills and nine digs as Callisburg defeated Pottsboro, 25-22, 25-16, 25-18, to move to 2-1 in district play.

Kallie Byrom added 11 assists 11 digs while Taylor Curtwright put down seven kills and Taylor Coleman collected 14 digs for Callisburg, which plays at first-place Aubrey, which is ranked ninth, on Friday night.

District 11-2A
No. 6 Gunter def. Tom Bean 3-0

GUNTER -- Joey Bailey had 11 kills and six aces while Lindsey Beaty added five kills and seven aces as Gunter defeated Tom Bean, 25-11, 25-6, 25-16.

Morgan Watson handed out 18 assists, Erica Young put down eight aces, Kristi Cross chipped in four kills and two aces and Harlee Johnson finished with seven kills for Gunter (26-9, 6-0), which has the bye on Friday and hosts Whitewright on Tuesday.

Bells def. Melissa 3-2

BELLS -- Kirsten Keene had 21 assists and 14 kills and Lauren Moore added 18 digs and eight kills as Bells rallied past Melissa, 15-25, 13-25, 25-20, 25-20, 15-9.

Samantha Stanek totaled 11 digs and combined with Laney Rowe for 11 kills for Bells (14-12, 5-1), which moved into sole possession of second place in 11-2A and hosts Howe Friday.

Rylie Ruth added seven kills, six aces and three digs for Bells and Hannah Scoggins chipped in nine digs.

Melissa (13-19, 4-2) plays at Whitewright on Friday night.

Leonard def. Howe 3-1

LEONARD -- Ashton James had six kills and Stephanie Creekmore added five kills in a losing effort as Leonard defeated Howe, 25-16, 13-25, 25-21, 25-17.

Briana Slawson and Jessica Luangaphay each put down four aces apiece while Slawson collected 17 digs and Paige Potter handed out 16 assists for Howe (14-22, 2-4), which plays at Bells on Friday night.

District 11-A
No. 24 Savoy def. Blue Ridge 3-0

BLUE RIDGE -- Bailey McGehee had 11 kills and Whitney Cooke handed out 18 assists as Savoy defeated Blue Ridge, 25-19, 25-10, 25-13, to take sole possession of second place.

Natalie Brasher, Caitlin McClain and Lauren Camp added five kills apiece and Camp collected seven digs for Savoy (17-10, 6-2).

TAPPS 4-2A
Texoma Christian def. Greenville Christian 3-1

Lauren Kirby had 14 kills, seven blocks and 16 digs while Elizabeth Heiser put down 10 kills as Texoma Christian defeated Greenville Christian, 25-11, 25-22, 24-26, 25-14.

Delaney Ortega added six kills, nine digs and five aces while Kharissa Rallis finished with 21 assists and five aces and Rachel Smith collected 11 digs for Texoma Christian (16-18, 5-0), which plays at Rockwall Heritage on Thursday night.
