COLLEGE STATION — Celina’s Cody Worrell threw a pair of late touchdown passes to Jose Romero as the Bobcats beat Rice Consolidated, 34-19, to win the Division II 7-on-7 championship Friday afternoon at Texas A&M.
Romero was named the tournament’s most valuable player and Worrell also threw two scoring passes to Justin Brumfield.
It was Celina’s third state 7-on-7 championship. The Bobcats also won the inaugural Division II (3A-2A-1A) title in 2007 when Worrell was a sophomore and in 2000.
Both times Celina went on to capture the state title in the following football season.
Celina’s only first-half points came on Ryan Merritt’s interception return for a touchdown.
Rice Consolidated rallied into a 13-7 halftime lead with Myles Dumont hitting Mario Hull and Michael Scott for scores.
The Bobcats advanced to the title game by defeating Abilene Wylie, 38-24, Brownwood, 41-39, and then Graham, 41-32.
Pilot Point, which also qualified for the 16-team championship bracket, lost to Graham, 41-21, in the opening round and was eliminated.
Melissa opened the consolation bracket with a 47-21 victory over Marion but then lost to Carthage, 32-27, in the quarterfinals. Carthage went won to the consolation final before losing to West, 35-28.
