Diamond roundup: Celina hurlers no-hit PP

CELINA — Ryan Merritt and Troy McCartney combined on a no-hitter as No. 9 Celina defeated Pilot Point, 9-0, in a warm-up game on Tuesday night.

Merritt walked two and struck out seven in six innings before McCartney finished the game off.

McCartney and Ryan Lohmann each had RBI doubles while Reid Babbitt was 2-for-2 with a pair of walks for Celina (21-4), which will face either Crandall or Carrollton Ranchview in the area round of the playoffs early next week.

District 10-A

Trenton 7,Dodd City 2

TRENTON — The host Tigers scored in every but the second as Trenton warmed up for the playoffs with a victory over Dodd City on Tuesday night.

Ryan McCarley, Justin Hinton and Brock Murphree all doubled for the Tigers (17-8, 10-4), who open the playoffs on Thursday against Archer City at 6:30 p.m. at Lewisville.

No. 2 Celina 6, No. 6 Brock 3

BROCK — Jasmine San Miguel doubled, Joey Cronin drove in one and each was 2-for-3 on Tuesday as Class 3A Celina defeated 2A Brock in a playoff warm-up game.

Kylie Roos struck out four and allowed four hits for Celina (31-4), which starts its fourth-straight postseason on Thursday against Kennedale at 7 p.m. in a Class 3A Region II area-round game at Lewisville Hebron.

The Celina-Kennedale winner will face either Bonham (26-7) or Fort Worth Castleberry next week in the regional quarterfinals.

Class 2A Region II

Prairiland 3, Honey Grove 2

MOUNT PLEASANT — Jessica Withers’ double in the bottom of the seventh inning drove home Sara Beth Upchurch with the winning run, as the Prairiland softball team defeated Honey Grove to sweep the best-of-three series.

Upchurch singled earlier in the inning and moved into scoring position on Jesi Davis’ sacrifice bunt. 

Honey Grove loaded the bases in the top of the seventh after Regan Rickman was intentionally walked, but the Lady Warriors failed to score. Prairiland, who advances to face District 9-2A champion Brock, was led on the mound by Leila Calabria, who allowed three hits and two runs (one earned) with two walks and 15 strikeouts.

Chanda Foster allowed nine hits and three earned runs with three walks and six strikeouts for the Lady Warriors.
