Baseball roundup: DHS' Ramsey ties mark in loss to Centennial

FRISCO — Evan Ramsey had a two-run homer and tied the school record for hits in a career as Denison put a scare into Frisco Centennial before the Yellow Jackets ended up on the losing end, 10-8, in District 9-4A action on Friday night.

Ramsey now has 91 hits, which ties Corey Evans and current Denison head coach Charlie Means for the most by a Yellow Jacket. The senior infielder can set the record when Denison (5-15, 0-13) closes out the season by hosting Sherman at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night.

Jordan Taylor also hit a two-run blast for the Jackets while Justin Maresh added a two-run double, Robert Rosser had a two-run single.

Garrett Killgore doubled and homered for Centennial (16-9, 8-5), which remains in a tie with McKinney North for the fourth and final playoff spot.

District 9-3A

No. 9 Celina 8, Prosper 7

PROSPER — The Bobcats pulled off a furious comeback and halted one by Prosper to win the district title in the regular-season finale for both teams on Friday night.

Taylor Collins had a two-run, ground-rule double and Charley Waldrep drove in a run as the Bobcats scored six runs in the seventh inning.

Prosper pushed across two runs in its half of the inning before falling a run short.

Ryan Merritt struck out eight and Troy McCartney picked up the victory in relief for Celina (20-3, 9-1), which has a first-round playoff bye and will host a pair of warm-up games — against Decatur at 6 p.m. on Thursday and Pilot Point at 7 p.m. on May 4.

District 10-2A

Pottsboro 10, S&S 7

POTTSBORO — Cory Griffith had a two-run double and two-run triple as Pottsboro held off S&S in district action on Friday.

John Hayes earned the victory and had a two-run homer as part of a five-run fifth inning while Larry Ellis hit a two-run double and Brian Dunkle drove in one with a double for the Cardinals.

Jesse Melton and Chris Matlock had back-to-back RBI doubles during a five-run seventh inning for S&S (8-13, 5-8).

Pottsboro (14-6, 9-4) must win in the regular-season finale at Krum at 4:30 p.m. on Monday to force no worse than a play-in game with Krum. If the Cardinals lose, they are eliminated from postseason contention.

District 11-2A

Tom Bean 6, Whitewright 5

TOM BEAN — Everado Falcon’s one-out home run in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Tom Bean a season-ending victory over Whitewright on Saturday afternoon.

Whitewright, which needed a victory to potentially force a tie for second place, knotted the game at five in the top of the inning when Dylan Griffin tripled and scored on an error.

Falcon finished the game 4-for-4 and Travis Hill added a three-run home run for Tom Bean (10-13, 5-9), which had lost to Leonard on Friday night.

Chris Bearden was 3-for-4 with a double and triple for Whitewright (13-7, 9-5), which clinched third place and will compete in the playoffs next week against an opponent to be determined.

Howe 4, Whitewright 2

WHITEWRIGHT — Brandon Crabb had two hits, including an RBI double, and struck out 10 as Howe moved into sole possession of second place with a victory over Whitewright on Friday night.

Kegan Duncan added two hits for Howe (14-5, 10-3), which can clinch second place with a win on Monday when it hosts Honey Grove at 4 p.m.

Dylan Griffin had two hits, including a double, while Bryant Threadgill had an RBI double and Chris Bearden struck out 11 for Whitewright (13-6, 9-4).

Bells 13, Melissa 3 (5)

BELLS — Reed Klose allowed two hits, homered and drove in four runs as Bells run-ruled Melissa in district action on Friday.

Cody Vaughn added a two-run home run for the Panthers while Trey Pedigo went 4-for-4, including two doubles, and two RBI while Ryan Klose was 3-for-4 and Coltin Payne had a two-run double for Bells (10-10, 6-7), which closes out the regular season at Gunter on Monday.

Gunter 12, Honey Grove 0 (5)

GUNTER — Paul Nicholson tossed a one-hitter as Gunter run-ruled Honey Grove in district action on Friday night.

Nicholson struck out eight and walked two, allowing only a third-inning single by Trey Goodwin.

Bobby Dodd was 2-for-3 and drove in two while A.J. Hester added a two-run double.

On Saturday, Chad Tucker capped Gunter’s four-run rally on a two-run single with no outs as the Tigers defeated Farmersville at home.

Hester, who was 3-for-3, had an RBI double in the inning and Jake Newman added an RBI single for Gunter (21-5, 13-0), which closes out the regular season by hosting Bells at 4 p.m. on Monday.

District 10-A

No. 4 Blue Ridge 6, Celeste 2

CELSTE — Zack Gidney remained undefeated on the mound while Robert Todd went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI as Blue Ridge remain undefeated in district play.

Gidney, who allowed six hits and struck out eight, was 2-for-3 with a double and RBI and Addison Williams finished 2-for-4 and drove in a run for the Tigers (20-1, 12-0).

Trenton 14, Ector 1, (5)

TRENTON — Justin Hinton batted 3-for-4 with two RBI, leading Trenton to a run-rule win over Ector.

Nathan Henry allowed one hit, walked one and struck out five in five innings to improve to 6-2 on the year. Henry also helped his own cause with an RBI double.

The Tigers (15-7, 8-4) can clinch a playoff berth with a win Monday afternoon at Sam Rayburn. Trenton holds a one-game lead and a tiebreaker advantage over fourth-place Celeste.

District 17-A

Wolfe City 11, Campbell 2

CAMPBELL — Kory Wilkinson was 3-for-4 with three doubles and three RBI while Josh Valcich had two doubles and drove in two as Wolfe City defeated Campbell in district play on Friday.

Dondre Wright stole four bases, Zack Williams drove in two runs and Kevin Eldridge allowed four hits and struck out nine for Wolfe City (16-4, 9-1), which hosts Cumby at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
