Baseball roundup: W'wright, Howe make playoffs

WHITEWRIGHT — Dylan Griffin and Blake Bearden had two-run singles as Whitewright clinched a playoff spot with an 11-1 victory in five innings over Leonard in District 11-2A action on Monday night.

Steven Spann was 2-for-3 with an RBI double and scored two runs while Troy Worthy had an RBI single and scored twice and Bryant Threadgill allowed two hits and struck out four for Whitewright (13-5, 9-3), which plays at Howe on Friday.

Howe 6, Melissa 2

MELISSA — Branden Crabb and T.J. Towne hit back-to-back solo home runs in the second inning as Howe defeated Melissa in 11-2A action to clinch a playoff spot on Monday night.

Kegan Duncan doubled, Devin Hargrove tripled and Crabb earned the victory for Howe (13-4, 9-2), which hosts Gunter at 4 p.m. today.

District 9-4A

Frisco 5, Denison 2

FRISCO — The host Racoons jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings to defeat Denison in district action on Monday.

The batters who scored four of the five runs for Frisco (8-16, 3-8) reach on a walk, error and two hit by pitches.

Justin Stowers singled, stole second and scored on Kyle Gaylon’s double for Denison’s first run while Jordan Taylor’s double drove in Just Maresh in the fifth inning.

The Yellow Jackets (5-13, 0-11) host McKinney North at 7:30 p.m. tonight.

District 10-3A

Van Alstyne 11, Anna 9

ANNA — Tanner Neill was 3-for-5 and had the go-ahead single in the seventh inning as Van Alstyne defeated Anna in district action on Monday.

Van Alstyne scored three runs apiece in the final two innings to pull out the win. David Goodenow drove in three, two on a home run, while Chance Grayson doubled and scored three runs and Jared Baker finished with three RBI for Van Alstyne (13-9, 4-3), which hosts Commerce tonight.

Zakk Perez had a two-run home run for Anna (5-16, 1-6).

District 10-A

No. 4 Blue Ridge 15, Trenton 1

TRENTON — Zack Gidney went 4-for-5 while Shane Williams, who had an RBI double, struck out eight and did not allow a hit in four innings of work as Blue Ridge defeated Trenton in district action on Monday.

Tye McKinney was 3-for-5 with a home run, Zach Rainwater added a two-run double and Robert Todd drove in two runs and scored three for Blue Ridge (18-1, 10-0), which can clinch a playoff spot with a victory at home over Savoy at 6 p.m. tonight.

Ryan McCarley had the lone hit for Trenton (14-6, 7-3), an RBI single in the fifth.
