Baseball roundup: Ponder edges Cards in duel

PONDER — Pottsboro’s Cory Griffith and Ponder’s Dalton Brown both pitch extremely well as Ponder came away with a 1-0 victory over the Cardinals in District 10-2A action on Friday night.

Brown scattered three hits for the shutout while Griffith gave up just a single in the sixth inning. He struck out 13 but walked seven.

Ponder (11-4, 7-2) scored the only run on a walk, error and sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Pottsboro (11-5, 6-3) plays at Aubrey on Tuesday night.

District 9-3A

Celina 3, Gainesville 0

GAINESVILLE — Three late runs helped Celina get past Gainesville.

The Bobcats scored twice in the sixth on an RBI single from Troy McCartney and Austin Carey came home on a passed ball. Garrett Stephenson added an RBI single in the seventh inning.

Reid Babbitt scattered five singles while walking three and striking out four for Celina (16-3, 5-1), which can clinch a playoff spot with a win at Whitesboro at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and a Sanger loss.

District 11-2A

Bells 16, Honey Grove 3

BELLS — Jordan Shults struck out 16 while Nate Neal was 3-for-5 with two RBI as Bells defeated Honey Grove.

Trey Pedigo, who had two doubles, and Coltin Payne each had three RBI and Hunter Carr and Pate Pritchard drove in a run apiece for Bells (9-7, 5-4), which plays at 7 p.m. at Whitewright on Tuesday.

Gunter 12, Tom Bean 6

TOM BEAN — Colton Hinson had a two-run homer and an RBI double as Gunter doubled up Tom Bean.

Chad Tucker went 2-for-4 with three RBI, including a two-run triple, for the Tigers (16-5, 9-0), who can clinch a playoff spot with a win and a Bells loss when they host Melissa at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Tom Bean scored all six runs in the fourth inning on five straight walks, a hit batter and an error.

Whitewright 7, Melissa 2

MELISSA — Blake Bearden hit a two-run homer and Chris Bearden struck out 12 as Whitewright defeated Melissa.

Kelby Dodson added an RBI double, Steven Spann had two hits and Bryant Threadgill drove in a run for Whitewright (11-5, 7-2), which hosts Bells at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

District 10-A

No. 4 Blue Ridge 30, Sam Rayburn 3 (5)

IVANHOE — Zach Gidney and Shane Williams each drove in three runs and scored three runs as Blue Ridge defeated Sam Rayburn.

Williams struck out five in two innings of work to earn the victory while Jake Price was 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI while Shawn McCarley and Trevor Agan each had two hits for Blue Ridge (16-1, 8-0).

Trenton 3, Celeste 2

TRENTON — T.J. Lynn reached on an infield single and error with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to score his brother, Trevor, from second with the game-winning run.

Randy Tripp added a two-out, two-run single in the second for Trenton (13-5, 6-2), which plays at 4:30 p.m. at Savoy on Tuesday.

Celeste had tied the game in the sixth. Blue Devil pitcher Justin Wright and Trevor Lynn combined to strike out 17 and walk four while allowing 14 hits — 13 singles.
