Baseball roundup: Cats take care of home business; Jackets falter

John Welborn went 3-for-4 with four RBI and Tyler Liss allowed only one in five innings of work on the mound as Sherman defeated McKinney, 8-5, in District 9-4A action at Veterans Field on Tuesday.

James Henderson and Garrett Powell each went 2-for-4 with an RBI while Madison Carter was also 2-for-4 for the Bearcats (17-3-1, 4-2), who host rival Denison on Friday. Liss allowed only three hits and a run, a solo home run by Jacob Smith in the fourth inning, while walking one and striking out seven.

“This was a big win for us and definitely gets us ready for Friday,” Sherman head coach Gary Cosper said. “The guys are excited and jumping out to the early lead in the second was huge for us.”

Austen Blalock allowed three hits and struck out one in the final two innings for Sherman, who defeated the Lions (10-6, 5-1) for the second time this season and ended their five-game winning streak.

Centennial 11, Denison 3

Visiting Centennial hit eight doubles and scored 10 runs over the first three innings in a district victory over Denison.

Jackson Wells had two hits, including an RBI single, and a walk for Denison (5-8, 0-6) while Robert Rosser added a two-run single for the Yellow Jackets.

Denison plays at rival Sherman at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

District 9-3A

No. 9 Celina 8, Argyle 0

CELINA — Troy McCartney had a three-run double as Celina defeated Argyle.

Austin Carey added a double, which drove in Jose Romero after he doubled, and Reid Babbitt combined with McCartney on the three-hit shutout.

Celina (14-2, 3-0) plays at Sanger on Friday at 7 p.m.

Whitesboro 5, Sanger 0

SANGER — Ryne Gillum and Ethan Shadden combined on a two-hit shutout in Whitesboro’s win at Sanger.

The outcome puts the two teams and Argyle in a three-way tie for third place.

Shadden also went 2-for-4 and drove in a run for Whitesboro (6-8, 1-2).

District 10-3A

Van Alstyne 12, Commerce 7

COMMERCE — Shane Jones had a two-run home run as Van Alstyne slugged its way past Commerce.

Sam Foret had a pair of triples and drove in a run while David Goodenow added an RBI double and Garrett Beach finished with two RBI for Van Alstyne (10-6, 2-1), which hosts North Lamar on Friday.

District 10-2A

Pottsboro 16, S&S 4 (5)

SADLER — Cory Griffith had a two-run home run, drove in another with a double and earned the victory as Pottsboro run-ruled S&S.

Larry Ellis added a two-run double while Brian Dunkle and Cameron Bowlware drove in runs with doubles for Pottsboro (10-3, 5-1), which plays at Callisburg at 4 p.m. on Friday.

Brett Huntsman doubled for S&S (6-7, 3-3), which scored all of its runs in the first inning.

District 11-2A

Whitewright 5, Howe 0

HOWE — Dylan Griffin had a pair of RBI singles and Steven Spann twirled a six-hit shutout as Whitewright defeated Howe.

Spann struck out six while Mark Gudgel and Bryant Threadgill added RBI singles for Whitewright (9-3, 5-1), which hosts Tom Bean at 7 p.m. on Friday.

T.J. Towne doubled for Howe (8-4, 4-2) while Bronco Wildman and Dylon Sloan each had two hits apiece.

Gunter 16, Honey Grove 4 (5)

GUNTER — Richie Robledo and Jake Newman each had two hits and three RBI as Gunter run-ruled Honey Grove.

A.J. Hester finished with two hits and two RBI for Gunter (13-5, 6-0), which plays at Bells on Friday at 8 p.m.

Chase Stoltenberg doubled for Honey Grove, which scored all of its runs on errors in the third inning.

Bells 18, Melissa 6 (6)

MELISSA — Nate Neal hit a grand slam as Bells blasted five home runs in a run-rule victory over Melissa.

Cody Vaughn and Ryan Klose each hit three-run homers while Reed Klose and Trey Pedigo added solo shots for Bells (8-5, 4-2), which hosts Gunter at 8 p.m. on Friday.

District 10-A

No. 5 Blue Ridge 6, Celeste 0

BLUE RIDGE — Zack Gidney pitched a one-hitter and drove in two runs in Blue Ridge’s win against Celeste.

Gidney walked one and struck out eight, allowing only a two-out single up the middle in the sixth inning.

Charles Deckard went 3-for-4 with two doubles and Tye McKinney finished with two RBI for Blue Ridge (12-1, 4-0), which plays today at 4:30 p.m. at Savoy in a make-up game.

District 10-A

No. 10 Trenton 19, Ector 0, (4)

ECTOR — Justin Hinton had a huge day both on the hill and at the dish, batting 4-for-4 with four doubles and four runs batted in and pitching three innings of no-hit ball in an easy mercy-rule win for the Tigers (10-5, 3-2). 

Catcher Ryan McCarley was 3-for-3 with a bases-loaded triple and six RBI on the day. McCarley’s triple occurred during the first inning as Trenton plated 11 runs to put the game on ice early.

Trenton hosts Sam Rayburn on Friday.

District 17-A

Wolfe City 13, Campbell 1 (5)

WOLFE CITY — Ryan Smith doubled, tripled and drove in five runs as Wolfe City run-ruled Campbell.

Kory Wilkinson struck out seven to earn the victory and Colt Herron added two hits for Wolfe City (9-3, 2-0), which hosts Yantis in a make-up game ay 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
