Softball roundup: Centennial beats Lady Jackets

FRISCO — Katie Burtis had two hits but Denison was unable to get any runs despite outhitting Frisco Centennial in a 3-0 loss to the Lady Titans in District 9-4A action on Monday night.

Ariel Fretwell, Mary Parker and Ashley Craig added singles for the Lady Jackets, whose best chance to score was putting the first two batters of the game on base before Shelby McCoy retired the next three hitters. 

Denison had at least one runner on in every inning. Centennial (10-11, 5-1), which is tied with McKinney and Wakeland for first place, scored a run in the third and two in the sixth.

Fretwell allowed just three singles and struck out eight. All the runs were unearned.

“She threw very well,” Denison head coach Ashli Wigington said. “She did exactly what we wanted her to do.”

Denison (13-13, 0-6) plays at Sherman tonight at 7 p.m. at Old Settlers Park.

District 9-3A

No. 13 Celina 17, Whitesboro 0 (3)

WHITESBORO — Joey Cronin was 2-for-3 with four RBI and a double as Celina won its 20th game and improved to 4-0 in district play.

Kylie Roos had three hits, including a double, and allowed only one hit with five strikeouts for Celina (20-4, 4-0), which hosts Argyle today to complete the first half of 9-3A action.

Shelby Black added three hits and Jasmine San Miguel had two, each joining Roos with an RBI.

District 10-2A

Ponder 3, Callisburg 2 (11)

CALLISBURG — After both teams scored in the seventh inning, Ponder finally broke through with the winning run in extra innings against Callisburg on Monday.

Ponder (11-3, 4-1) had scored in the top of the seventh for a 2-0 lead before Callisburg rallied with two of its own.

Sara Richardson scored a run for the Lady Wildcats while Chelsea Antle had two hits and a run for Ponder.

District 11-2A

Tom Bean 8, Leonard 3

TOM BEAN — Maggie Moore had a pinch-hit, two-run single in the sixth inning to help Tom Bean pull away from Leonard in district action on Monday night.

Jessica Lubbers’ went 2-for-3 with an RBI while Ashlyn LeDane had two hits and scored two runs and Rachel Jones allowed an earned run on four hits with 12 strikeouts for Tom Bean (11-6, 6-1), which hosts Bells tonight at 6 p.m.

Bells 12, Melissa 2

MELISSA — Kirsten Keene had a two-run home run as she drove in four during Bells’ run-rule victory over Melissa on Monday night.

Rylie Ruth added an RBI triple, Hannah Scoggins went 4-for-5 and Hilary Monk was 3-for-5 with an RBI for Bells (15-6, 3-1), which plays at Tom Bean tonight at 6 p.m.

Howe 15, Whitewright 5 (6)

HOWE — Katie Hogan went 3-for-3 with a home run and five RBI as Howe run-ruled Whitewright in district action on Monday.

Jordan England went 4-for-4 with a double and scored three runs while Sara Lopez tripled and Brianna Slawson and Casey Schoof each had a pair of hits and scored two runs for Howe (12-6, 5-2), which plays today at Gunter.

Skylar Greenwood was 3-for-3 with two RBI for Whitewright.

District 10-A

Blue Ridge 4, Ector 1

BLUE RIDGE — Haleigh Pierce threw a one-hitter and struck out 14 as Blue Ridge defeated Ector in district action on Monday.

Pierce, who also drove in a run, walked two and allowed just a fourth-inning single by Malory Mayo. Ector’s run in the fourth was unearned.

Crista Marksberry had two RBI for Blue Ridge (9-6, 2-0), which plays today at 4:30 p.m. at Savoy.
