FRISCO -- Austen Blalock went 4-for-5 with five RBIs and hit a pair of doubles, while Garrett Powell got the win in relief, as Sherman remained undefeated and won its District 9-4A opener in wild fashion, 14-13, at Frisco on Tuesday night.
John Welborn was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs, Winston Franks went 2-for-5 and J.J. Floyd added a double for the Bearcats (13-0-1, 1-0), who beat the Raccoons (4-8, 0-1) for the second time this season. Tyler Liss finished 2-for-4 with an RBI double in the sixth to tie the game 12-12.
"I still haven't caught my breath yet, and it was certainly a wild night," Sherman coach Gary Cosper said. "There were plenty of things happen we didn't expect to occur, and as crazy as this game was, a lot of things must be going for you. We were able to overcome some mistakes with hustle, intensity and desire. It's nice to get a win on a night like this, because it certainly could've gone either way."
Powell (3-0) pitched the final two innings, allowing one hit and an unearned run with three strikeouts. Steven Farley had a key sacrifice bunt in the seventh to put the Bearcats up a run on an error, and the eventual game-winning run crossed the plate on Trey Hudgins' RBI ground out.
Sherman competes at the McKinney Tournament beginning Thursday and returns to district action at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at McKinney North.
Frisco Liberty 10, Denison 5
Jordan Taylor went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run and an RBI double but Liberty's late surge handed the Yellow Jackets a loss in the district opener for both teams at Denison on Tuesday.
The Jackets had a 3-0 lead through four innings before Liberty scored five in the fifth and four in the sixth.
"Cruising right along to the fifth," Denison head coach Charlie Means "In every high school baseball game, something's going to go wrong and we didn't respond well to it."
Justin Stowers went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and Evan Ramsey had two hits, including a triple, for Denison (5-3), which hosts the Ty Comstock Classic, which starts on Friday. J.J. Pearce faces Celina at 2 p.m. and then takes on Denison at 4 p.m.
District 10-2A
Pottsboro 12, Callisburg 2 (5)
POTTSBORO -- Cory Griffith went 3-for-3 with two home runs and three RBI as Pottsboro run-ruled Callisburg in the district opener for both teams.
John Hayes pitched a one-hitter with three walks and 12 strikeouts for the Cardinals (6-2, 1-0). Kevin Garcia was 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBI, Dakota Baugus went 2-for-3 with two RBI while Cameron Bowlware finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Garcia, Brian Dunkle and Larry Ellis all added doubles for Pottsboro, which plays Sanger at 11:15 a.m. on Thursday in the first round of the Van Alstyne Tournament.
S&S 5, Valley View 4
VALLEY VIEW -- Chris Matlock struck out 12 and S&S hung on for a district-opening victory over Valley View on Tuesday.
Tommy Carney doubled and Brett Huntsman tripled for S&S, which scored two runs in the second and three runs in the fifth.
District 11-2A
Gunter 15, Leonard 3 (5)
LEONARD -- Paul Nicholson went 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI as Gunter won its district opener at Leonard on Tuesday.
Brad Cross doubled and drove in three runs while Leo Castorena had two RBI for Gunter (6-5-1, 1-0), which faces Paradise at 1 p.m. on Thursday in the Windthorst Tournament.
Matt Bell doubled and had two hits for Leonard (3-6, 0-1), who plays Gladewater Sabine at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday in the first round of its tournament.
Whitewright 10, Honey Grove 0 (6)
WHITEWRIGHT -- Chris Bearden scattered two singles and a walk while striking out eight as Whitewright opened district play with a victory over Honey Grove on Tuesday.
Bearden, Kelby Dodson, Dylan Griffin, Dustin Watson and Bryant Threadgill each had two hits for Whitewright (5-2, 1-0), which plays Community at 6 p.m. and Van Alstyne at 8:15 p.m. on Thursday in the Van Alstyne Tournament.
Howe 9, Bells 6
BELLS -- A huge seventh-inning rally lifted Howe past Bells in the district opener on Tuesday night.
Devin Hargrove had an RBI during a five-run seventh in which Howe had six hits to rally for the win.
T.J. Towne, David Goucher and Dylan Sloan all doubled for the Bulldogs (5-2, 1-0), which take on Pottsboro and Sanger in the Van Alstyne Tournament on Thursday.
District 10-A
Savoy 7, Dodd City 4
SAVOY -- John Morris went 4-for-4 with three doubles and drove in three runs as Savoy opened district play with a victory against Dodd City on Tuesday.
Ethan Stephens was 3-for-3 for Dodd City while Will Reid homered for the Hornets.
Ricky Mueller added a double for Savoy, Justin Curry drove in a run and Mark Wheless struck out eight for Dodd City (4-3, 1-0).
Trenton 6, Celeste 0
CELESTE -- Trevor Lynn drove in three runs on a pair of doubles as Trenton opened district plau with a victory against Celeste on Tuesday night.
Trevor Lynn struck out seven and worked around six walks in six innings to get the victory for Trenton (7-3, 1-0), which faces Sunnyvale at 11:45 a.m. on Thursday in the Leonard Tournament.
